MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS
14 November 1999
Release of James Peng
The Australian Government welcomes wholeheartedly the decision of the Chinese Government to release Mr James Peng on parole and to deport him to Australia.
Mr Peng's situation has been the subject of repeated representations by the Government to secure his early release. The Prime Minister, other Ministers and I have discussed Mr Peng's situation at the highest levels with the Chinese Government.
This decision is an expression of the positive state of relations between Australia and China.
We hope that Mr Peng and his family will be given the privacy they need to enjoy their reunion.
