Visit to the Philippines and Thailand
I will visit the Philippines and Thailand during the period 14 - 18 November.
In the Philippines (14-16 November) I will represent Australia at the Third Philippine-Australia Dialogue (PAD).
The PAD will be held in Cebu, 15-16 November, where I will hold discussions with my Filipino counterpart, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Mr Domingo Siazon, as well as the Secretary of Agriculture of the Philippines, Mr Edgardo Angara.
I will also have an opportunity to meet the Vice President
of the Philippine Republic, Mrs Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, at the
Dialogue, and to visit an aid project for street children in
which she has a close interest and which the Australian Government
I will then travel to Thailand for the Australia Thailand Ministerial Economic Commission on 17 November in the southern city of Nakhon Si Thammarat, where I will be accompanied by the Minister for Trade, Mr Mark Vaile. Mr Vaile and I will hold talks on foreign and trade policy issues with our Thai counterparts, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister, Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi. The meeting, to be held in Dr Surin's home-town, aims to boost our existing bilateral relationship further, by moving the agenda forward on a range of commercial and political issues. It will provide an opportunity to share perspectives on key strategic matters such as East Timor, ASEAN, Burma, regional security, UN and disarmament issues.
This is my second visit to Thailand in the past four weeks, demonstrating Australia's commitment to this important and growing bilateral relationship.
During my visit to Thailand I will also address an industry dinner on ways in which the Australia- Thailand bilateral relationship has been enhanced against the background of major political and economic changes in the region.
The strength of Australia's bilateral relationships with both the Philippines and Thailand is being demonstrated to the world, through our commitment to the multi-national force, INTERFET, in East Timor.
