MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS
28 October 1999
Parliamentary Travel to East Timor
The Government is aware of interest expressed by a number of parliamentarians to travel to East Timor. The situation there, however, remains delicate and the primary objective of INTERFET remains the restoration of peace and security, the protection of UNAMET and the facilitation of humanitarian assistance. The Government is, therefore, strongly recommending that parliamentary visits be deferred until after the situation on the ground stabilises.
In due course the Government will facilitate a parliamentary delegation visit to East Timor under the auspices of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade. It is important that all visits be conducted in an orderly and coordinated manner to avoid overburdening the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) in its early stages.
