MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS
26 October 1999
Indonesia: New Cabinet
I welcome the announcement of Indonesia's new Cabinet. The Ministerial line-up reflects depth and experience, as well as a number of new figures. The balance and quality of the cabinet is a credit to the judgement and political skill of President Abdurrahman Wahid.
Because of its strength the Cabinet is likely to be received positively by the international community. The election of President Abdurrahman Wahid and Vice President Megawati was a boost to investor confidence; the new Cabinet should further assist the return of confidence.
The Australian government looks forward to working closely with the new Indonesian government across a range of portfolio interests. We have had good relations with a number of the new Indonesian Ministers and look forward to developing these contacts further. I am confident we can build a mutually productive and beneficial relationship with the new Indonesian Government.
I particularly welcome the appointment of Dr Alwi Shiliab as Minister for Foreign Affairs. I met Dr Shiliab in July and Ambassador McCarthy has had a number of useful discussions with him in recent times.
The Australian people, and the business community in particular,
should also be encouraged by the installation of the new Government,
and the fresh chapter that is now in prospect for Indonesia,
politically and economically.
