Indonesia: Vice-Presidential Election
I wish to congratulate Mrs Megawati Soekarnoputri and warmly welcome her election as Indonesia's Vice-President.
As a leading opposition figure during the New Order period she embodied the democratic aspirations of many Indonesians. Her participation in the new Indonesian government is therefore most welcome. She has much to offer the government and the people of Indonesia.
Mrs Megawati has consistently appealed for high ideals and values in public life. She is strongly committed to human rights; to a humane and peaceful settlement of Indonesia's various regional problems; and to social justice. She and the party she leads have affirmed their support for the economic reform process necessary for Indonesia's economic recovery.
We hope she will work closely with President Abdurrahman Wahid, who is also a personal friend, to continue Indonesia's transformation to a democratic state and a stable market-oriented economy. In all of this President Wahid and Vice-President Megawati can be assured of the support and assistance of Australia and the international community.
We look forward to developing a constructive relationship with the Government led by Abdurrahman Wahid and Megawati Soekarnoputri.
