Bougainville - the Way Ahead - Extension of Suspension of Provisional Government
I welcome the decision this week by the Parliament of Papua New Guinea to extend the suspension of Bougainville's provincial government for a further six months. This will give new momentum to move the peace process forward.
I encourage all parties involved in the process to seize this opportunity to reach agreement on the province's political future.
There has been remarkable progress in the peace process over the last two years, reflecting the parties' real desire to put years of conflict behind them.
Through our contribution to the Peace Monitoring Group and our extensive aid program, Australia has played its part in giving strong support to the Government of Papua New Guinea and the people of Bougainville as they work towards building a lasting peace in the province.
The creation of a permanent government structure for Bougainville
is the next step in this process. After years of interim arrangements,
it is time for certainty and stability. The people of Bougainville
need and deserve nothing less.
