MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS
3 September 1999
East Asia-Latin America Forum
The first Senior Officials' meeting of the East Asia-Latin America Forum (EALAF) was held in Singapore between 1-3 September.
I was pleased to send a senior Australian official to the meeting, in response to an invitation from the Singaporean Prime Minister.
I believe that the meeting succeeded in its objective of providing an informal forum to help bring closer together the countries of East Asia and Latin America.
There was a broad sweep of countries from the two regions represented at the Senior Officials' meeting with useful exchanges of views on a range of issues that affect countries in both East Asia and Latin America.
This included discussion of ways of encouraging greater economic and trade cooperation and information exchange, and possible projects under EALAF auspices to bring countries of the two regions even closer together.
The meeting represented a useful and welcome addition to the network of regional dialogue.
It established a mechanism to help build better linkages between the East Asian region with Latin America, which supplement well the CER-MERCOSUR dialogue that Australia and New Zealand has with MERCOSUR countries in Latin America.
