MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS
10 May 1999
Death of Foreign Office Minister
I was saddened to learn of the death earlier today of the British Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Mr Derek Fatchett. Mr Fatchett will be sorely missed.
Mr Fatchett was the British minister with responsibility for Asian and Middle East affairs and had held his position since May, 1997.
He was a person with whom I have had a series of useful discussions in recent years on a range of regional issues. Our most recent conversation was in Bali on 27 April following Prime Minister Howard's meeting with President Habibie and just ahead of Mr Fatchett's visit to East Timor.
Mr Fatchett was an
intelligent, engaging and inquisitive person. His common sense
and practical approach to difficult foreign policy issues will
be particularly missed in relation to Britain's engagement with
Indonesia during its difficult transition.
