New Passport Application Forms

I am pleased to announce that new passport application forms will be introduced from 2 September 1998 as part of a major updating of the passport issuing process.

Over the next few months, new technology and streamlined procedures will simplify the issue and renewal of passports, leading to increased efficiencies and cost savings with enhanced service and security.

The new forms, which are central to these changes, will include a simpler yet more secure identification system for applicants. Scanning and the use of intelligent character recognition technology will permit electronic verification of the information provided.

There will also be separate Adult and Child forms, in recognition of the importance of protecting children from abduction. The provision of separate forms for children highlights the fact that particular attention is paid to the issue of passports to minors.

Australian passports enjoy a very high international reputation for their quality and security features and for the thorough issuing procedures necessary to establish entitlement. It is important that these standards be protected, maintained and improved wherever possible. The new process will meet this objective, while ensuring that the million Australian citizens who apply for passports each year continue to receive the best possible service.

The new forms will be available from passport offices and most post offices from the middle of this week. To avoid inconvenience to applicants, old forms will be phased out over the next month.
