THE MINISTER FOR TRADE, THE MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT
JOINT MEDIA RELEASE
Tourism Growth for Australia and Indonesia
Tourism and trade opportunities between Australia and Indonesia
have been boosted by a bilateral agreement that will substantially expand
air services over the next 18 months. Details of the passenger and freight
services deal were announced today in a joint statement by the Deputy Prime
Minister and Minister for Trade, Tim Fischer, and the Minister for Transport,
John Sharp.
"Indonesian officials agreed to a 38pc increase in air services during
talks held last week with Australian officials," the Ministers said."The
Australian Government is particularly pleased with this outcome, as Indonesia
is emerging as one of Australia's largest tourism markets. "The door
has also been opened for the operation of all cargo services. Both sides
agreed the growth in freight demand should allow airlines the opportunity
to plan for up to three services a week with any aircraft type." The
Ministers said the breakthrough on air freight was particularly pleasing,
and they looked forward to the trade benefits which would result.
"The outcome is a further example of the goodwill between Indonesia
and Australia and indicates the eagerness of the two countries to stimulate
the important tourism sector," the Ministers said. "My visit to
Indonesia could not have been more timely," Mr Fischer said. "Although
the Australia-Indonesia market continues to be dominated by Australians
seeking holidays in Indonesia, inbound tourism from Indonesia grew by more
than 25pc last year. Garuda, Qantas, Ansett and other operators will all
benefit."
Mr Fischer today officially opened new Qantas administration offices in
Jakarta, on the last day of his visit to Indonesia.
